01 / YOUR STARTING POINT

A few simple measurements

For adults aged 20 and over. All fields stay in temporary browser memory.

How to measure your waist

Find the midpoint between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips. Keep the tape level, snug without compressing skin. Breathe out naturally before measuring. This differs from the male Navy abdomen site.

BMI can be misleading with high muscle mass and needs careful interpretation in older adults. These estimates cannot diagnose a condition or prescribe a target weight.

02 / THE BIG PICTURE

Your numbers, in context.

Start with your height and weight.
Your results will appear here.

A screening measure is one part of a much bigger picture.

03 / OPTIONAL DETAIL

A circumference-based estimate

The historical US Navy method estimates body fat from tape measurements. It does not measure muscle, and may be inaccurate for an individual.

Explore the body-fat estimator

Choose the sex-specific equation you wish to use. These equations were developed for male and female populations; applicability varies, including with hormonal treatment. You can skip this section.

Use a flexible tape without compressing the skin. Measure the neck just below the larynx, shoulders relaxed. For the male equation measure the abdomen at the navel after a normal exhalation. For the female equation measure the natural waist at its narrowest point and hips over the widest part of the buttocks. Keep abdominal/hip tape horizontal. Repeat measurements to check consistency. All inputs here are in centimetres; the calculation converts to inches.

TAKE THE CONTEXT WITH YOU

A clear report. Ready to share.

Measurements, estimates, scenarios and references in a readable A4 PDF, prepared entirely on your device.

Downloaded files contain your measurements. Keep them private. They are not deleted when you reset this page.

Temporary state only: BodyScope does not save measurements to browser storage or send them to a server. Refreshing or leaving this page clears the app state. MedTrack’s optional saved records are separate.

What does BMI tell you?

Body mass index compares weight with height. The formula is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It is a screening measure, not a diagnosis, and cannot distinguish fat from muscle. This tool uses CDC adult categories for ages 20 and over.

International and South Asian thresholds

International adult categories are underweight below 18.5, healthy weight from 18.5 to below 25, overweight from 25 to below 30, and obesity from 30. Obesity classes begin at 30, 35 and 40. NICE uses lower thresholds for South Asian and some other ethnic backgrounds: overweight from 23 to below 27.5, and obesity from 27.5. BodyScope labels this interpretation separately; it does not infer ethnicity.

How is waist-to-height ratio interpreted?

Divide waist by height using the same units. NICE describes 0.4 to below 0.5 as healthy central adiposity, 0.5 to below 0.6 as increased, and 0.6 or above as high. Below 0.4 is outside those stated categories and is not automatically better. NICE recommends this assessment alongside BMI for adults with BMI below 35. For higher BMI, BodyScope shows the ratio without applying those categories.

Body-fat methodology and limitations

The historical circumference equations use base-10 logarithms and measurements in inches. Male: 86.010 × log10(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. Female: 163.205 × log10(waist + hips − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387. Centimetres are divided by 2.54 before calculation. These continuous estimates are not a military eligibility assessment.

These equations were developed and studied in military populations; accuracy may differ by age, body type and population. Tape placement can substantially change results. A single estimate is not a clinical measurement. Fat mass = weight × estimated body-fat fraction. Fat-free mass = weight − fat mass; it includes water, organs and bone as well as muscle.

Who should avoid these estimates?

This adult tool is not for children, teenagers or pregnancy. Fluid retention, limb loss and other changes in body composition can make estimates misleading. Older adults and people with high muscle mass need careful interpretation. Discuss measurements in the context of your overall health with a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Are my measurements saved?

No. BodyScope keeps entries in temporary client-side memory, without saved history or a health-record database. Your downloaded PDF is a separate local file under your control.

Does the body map identify visceral fat?

No. Region selections are subjective observations. They do not diagnose disease, infer hormones, estimate visceral fat or calculate numerical risk.

Is the BMI weight interval a target?

No. It is the mathematical interval corresponding to the selected BMI thresholds at your height, with rounded display values. It is not a personalised weight recommendation.

Can I print or share my results?

Download the A4 PDF, or open the printable report and use your browser’s print controls. No measurements are uploaded. Review the file before choosing who to share it with.
